“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23-24)
On Ash Wednesday, we begin the Lenten journey of repentance, reflection, and renewal. Jesus’ words in Luke 9:23-24 remind us that following Him requires sacrifice and surrender. To take up our cross is to choose a life of obedience, trusting in God’s will rather than our desires. It’s a call to die to selfishness and live for something greater—God’s Kingdom.
Lent is a time for us to examine our hearts and ask: What are the things in our lives that we are holding on to, keeping us from fully following Jesus? What do we need to deny and surrender to follow Him more closely? The act of taking up our cross daily is a reminder that this is not a one-time decision, but a continual commitment to live for Christ.
Challenge: What does taking up your cross look like today? How can you surrender more fully to Jesus in this season of Lent?
Prayer: Lord, help me to deny myself and follow You more closely this Lent. Teach me what it means to take up my cross and live for You each day. Amen.
