“Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.” (Luke 22:3–6, NIV)
Judas’ betrayal of Jesus is one of the most sobering moments in Scripture. He was one of the Twelve, a close companion of Jesus, yet he allowed his heart to be overtaken by greed and the influence of Satan. In exchange for thirty pieces of silver, Judas decided to betray the Savior he once followed. His actions serve as a stark reminder of how easy it is to allow our hearts to be swayed by temptation, pride, or selfish desires.
Lent is a time to reflect deeply on the state of our hearts. Are we following Christ with pure devotion, or are we allowing sin to take root and guide our decisions? Just as Judas’ heart was hardened, we, too, must guard against allowing anything to separate us from Jesus.
Challenge: In what areas of your life are you allowing sin to take hold? How can you invite God to examine and purify your heart during this season?
Prayer: Lord, search my heart and reveal any areas where I have betrayed or turned away from You. Cleanse me, and help me to follow You with a pure heart. Amen.
